Title win was for Tony
(Published: 20th April 2006)

ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman dedicated the Reds’ historic title win to the memory of Anthony Cavanagh.

Anthony, Stanley skipper Peter’s younger brother, died after being hit once in a bar in Liverpool in October.

"Peter had made a promise to his brother while he was in a coma that he would win the league for him and he has delivered it," said the boss. "Peter has had a couple of injuries but he has been a man mountain for us. He is the most successful captain in Accrington’s history and it is testament to the lad’s character and the type of person he is to come through what has happened. He is a winner."

The skipper admitted the emotion of the day got to him.

He said: "I am usually the strong one but it was hard. I am just glad we carried out the promise."

But Cavanagh is hoping there are happier times to come when he lifts the Conference Trophy.
