Stanley skipper's brother in fight for life
(Published: 30th September 2005)

THE BROTHER of the Accrington Stanley captain was left fighting for his life following a brutal late-night attack.

Anthony Cavanagh, younger brother of Stanley player Peter, was knocked unconscious from a single blow in the early hours of Saturday night. He was punched to the head after accidentally bumping into somebody outside a bar in Liverpool.

The 21-year-old had been out for the night because he was on shore leave form the Royal Navy.

Cavanagh missed Saturday's game with Dagenham as he had to rush back from Essex to be at his brother's bedside. He played in the defeat to Morecambe on Tuesday night and scored from the penalty spot.

After the game the skipper said: "I wanted to play and it was just good to take my mind off things. All the lads have been supportive and they sent me texts after the win at Dagenham saying it was for me. It was nice to hear."
